To understand how meaning works in any language, you need to look at semantic relations. These are the connections between words. They allow us to group words based on shared features, their membership in a semantic field, or the specific bonds they hold at the level of meaning.

  • Rabbit: animal, mammal, herbivore, leporid, small size, wild

Understanding Semantic Fields

A semantic field, or semantic family, is a group of words that share semas. A mosquito, a whale, an octopus, and a dog all share the sema “animal.” Therefore, they belong to the semantic field of “animals.”

You can create different fields depending on which semas are shared.

The octopus and the whale both belong to the field of “marine animals” because they share the sema “marine.” The whale also belongs to the field of “mammals” alongside the dog, because they share the sema “mammal.”

However, you cannot create a field of “pets” based solely on these three. Only the dog fits that specific sema. Other animals, like a cat or a canary, could join a “pet” field if they share that specific trait of being acquired as a companion.

Here are some concrete examples of semantic fields:

  • House (sharing semas of “objects” and “in the house”): chair, table, bed, sofa, lamp, door
  • Herbivores (sharing semas of “animals” and “herbivores”): zebra, cow, giraffe, wildebeest, deer

But here is the catch. Context matters. Many “synonyms” only work in specific scenarios. Acquire and buy seem interchangeable. You can buy a new bike. You can acquire a new bike. But you don’t buy knowledge. You acquire it. Swap them, and the sentence breaks.

Antonyms do the opposite. They define meaning by contrast.

  • Happy and sad
  • High and low
  • Start and finish
  • Turn on and turn off
  • Beautiful and ugly
  • Smooth and rough

Polysemy

In a dictionary, polysemous words have numbered definitions. Each number points to a different sense.

Take cabo (from Latin caput, meaning head). The dictionary lists:

  2. A small remnant or scrap.
  3. A handle.
  4. A thread or strand in certain trades.

These aren’t random. They all relate to the idea of an “end” or “head” of something.

Other common polysemous words:

  • House (building, family lineage, business establishment)

  • Fire (flame, campfire, gunshot, stove)
  • Capital (head, main city, wealth, financial assets)

When you see one word with multiple definitions, check if they share a root concept. That’s polysemy.

Homonymy

Semantic analysis also helps us distinguish words that look or sound identical but are totally unrelated. This is homonymy.

Homonims are different words that happen to share the same form. They have different origins (etymologies) and different meanings.

Consider asa. One comes from the verb asar (to roast). It’s the heat applied to meat. The other asa is the handle of a pot. Same pronunciation. Zero connection.

Dictionaries treat these as separate entries. If you look up a word and see multiple distinct entries for the same spelling or sound, you are looking at homonyms.

Homophones

These sound the same but are spelled differently.

  • Callado (silent, from callar ) vs. Cayado (a walking stick). In many Spanish dialects, the “ll” and “y” sounds merge. So these sound identical.

Homographs

These sound and look exactly the same.

  • Libro (book) vs. Libro (I free/loathe, from librar ).
  • Cobra (the snake) vs. Cobra (I collect payment, from cobrar ).
  • Bote (can/container) vs. Bote (boat).
  • Lima (the citrus fruit) vs. Lima (the tool used for filing).

Context is your only guide here. You don’t eat a boat. You don’t file a fruit. The sentence tells you which word you’re dealing with.

Hyponymy and Hypernymy

Meaning rarely exists in a vacuum. Words fit into hierarchies.

Hyponymy is the relationship where one meaning is included within another. It’s a “type of” relationship.

Take dog. German Shepherd, dachshund, and Yorkshire Terrier are all types of dogs. Therefore, they are hyponyms of dog.

But dog is broader. It covers all breeds. So dog is the hypernym of those specific breeds.

This logic scales up.

  • Dog is a hyponym of mammal.
  • Mammal is a hypernym of dog.
  • Mushroom is a hypernym of porcini, button mushroom, black truffle, and boletus.

Think of it as a nested box. The hyponym is the small box inside the bigger hypernym box. Not everything in the big box is a small box. But every small box is part of the big one.
