Amir Pnueli changed how we think about software. He didn’t just write code. He wrote the rules that ensure code doesn’t crash. Born in Nahalal, Palestine (now Israel) on April 22, 1941, he became the first person to bring temporal logic into computer science. This work earned him the 1996 A.M. Turing Award. Pnueli started with math. He received a bachelor’s degree from the Israel Institute of Technology. Later, he earned a doctorate in mathematics from the Weizmann Institute of Science in 1967. His most cited work is with Zohar Manna. They wrote The Temporal Logic of Reactive and Concurrent Systems: Specification in 1991. They followed it up with Temporal Verification of Reactive Systems: Safety in 1995.
