A significant collection of over 200 rare and colorful minerals will be auctioned by Heritage Auctions on March 20th. The auction features pieces from the lifetime collection of William and Ruth Loomis, who operated Loomis Minerals in Flagstaff, Arizona. This event highlights a growing trend in mineral collecting as both a hobby and an investment.
A Lifelong Passion Made Public
The Loomis’ collection began as a shared interest after their marriage in 1987. They dedicated years to sourcing exceptional specimens from mines worldwide, eventually turning their passion into a business.
According to Nic Valenzuela, Director of Fine Minerals at Heritage Auctions, the pair’s deep knowledge of mineralogy is evident in the quality of the lots being offered. Valenzuela stated that the auction provides a unique opportunity for collectors to acquire specimens from historically important mining locations.
Key Items and Access to the Auction
The auction includes a variety of glittery and otherwise unique mineral specimens. Interested buyers can view full details and images of all lots on the Heritage Auctions website at HA.com/8244.
The event underscores a broader trend of increased interest in collecting rare geological materials, which has seen growth alongside broader collector markets for art, antiques, and other luxury items. This auction will be a benchmark for the current market value of high-grade mineral specimens.
